[30-06-2008]

UBA TAKES BANKING TO THE BORDER

Barely three (3) months after launching six branches in Accra, United Bank for Africa (Ghana) Ltd, a subsidiary of UBA Plc, which is the largest banking group in West-Africa, has unveiled a new set of four (4) ultra-modern and fully networked branches. This time around the bank has spread its tentacles to the border town of Aflao in the Volta region in its bid to provide affordable banking services for the un-banked and under-banked persons.

The remaining branches are located in East Legon, Dzorwulu and the Kaneshie market in Greater Accra. This brings to 16, the total number of branches UBA has established since entering the banking industry in 2005. On the average UBA has been opening branches at an average rate of one every two and half months.

This is in line with the bank’s roll out strategy which is aimed at developing a branch foot-print and delivery network that will ensure that the banks services are always within reach of valued customers.

Notable among the personalities that graced the launch ceremony was His Majesty Togbui Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, Honourable Justice Kudjoe, Chief Executive Officer – Ketu District and other important personalities from the Immigration, CEPS and Police command.

Speaking at the formal launch at the Aflao branch at the border exit gate in Aflao, Nnamdi Okonkwo – Managing Director/ CEO mentioned that locating in Aflao presented UBA with a good opportunity to be closer to the doorstep of their target customers – traders, businesses, salaried and casual workers, sellers and shop owners. He added that UBA will continue its policy of opening new branches across the country and going by this strategy it will carry out its intention of opening another six (6) branches before close of this year.

The new branches will serve both retail and wholesale banking customers, consisting mainly of traders and business men/women who ply the sub-region with a comprehensive range of products. These include the traditional banking products and services with an emphasis on technology driven products/services delivered through an on-line real-time technology platform.
